Confession 2: I HATE Trophy Whores

It’s May 26th 2007 and ‘Halo 2′ is released into the world by our heros at Bungie Studios.  But this time it came with one new feature not ONLY new to the Halo game series, but new to every single game before itself.  And that is the ‘Achievement System’.

Originally starting on the Xbox, this system of obtaining points and commendations for doing things in game then spread onto the PS3, with the first appearences being in ‘PixelJunk Eden’ and ‘Super Stardust HD’.

Now don’t get me wrong here, I love playing a game, being in that moment, and then seeing that little icon appear at the top right hand of the screen telling you that you have unlocked a trophy or achievement.  To me, it’s basically your console congratulating you on being ‘SO FUCKING PRO YOU JUST DID SOME CRAZY ASS SHIT RIGHT THERE SO I’MA GIVE YOU A LITTLE SOMETHING TO PROVE HOW FRIKKIN’ LEET YOU ARE!’ Yeah, my mind actually does that shit.

So yay for me, I just got some more points to go on my Gamerscore or another trophy to add to my collection.  But thats it.  Thats where my obsession stops.  I did something so awesome by myself that I didn’t even know existed, and I got commended for it.  I now carry on with the game.  End of.

But there are those certain people out there, who whore the trophies.  Who whore the achievements.  These people CRAVE the titles and total that come with completing a set achievement in a game, and using it as a form of boasting or evidence to represent how damn amazing they are.  But no, you’re really not that good.

You looked before hand, found out which challenges you wanted to undertake, and went out and created your success.  You aren’t naturally that amazing at all.  If anything you’re probably making up for the lack of social life you have or the distant ‘lack’ of other you may have.  I know I’m one to talk, mine’s not that bad of a score.  In fact, I’m rather happy.  But I got it through achieving them on my own course.  But this is why I hate Achievement Whores…

Me: Oh wow, nice Gamerscore dude, you must of being on here for years right?

Whore: LOLOLOL N000.  IR JUS SO PR0 I ‘AVE COMPLTD ALL MAH GAEMS.

Me: Seriously?  Thats amazing.  Must of put some time and effort into that then?

Whore: HURR DURR NO.  I LOOKD @ DER L1ST OF TR0FIES N DEN I G0T DEM.

Me: So you in a way cheated?  You found out what to do, and maniplulated your gaming experience in order to get a pixelated trophy, and a couple more digits added onto your gamerscore.  You’re so pro. T_T

Whore: … I R GOT MORE SCORE DAN U!  I R WINRAR!  U R N00B!

Seriously, all of them should die in a fire.  Bravo if you got all of your trophies and achievements by yourself.  Honestly, I’m impressed.  I’ve only done it to a couple of games that I would die for, but even that was hard.

Achievements and Trophies to me are something to really make you happy, and feel like you have (hence the name) achieved something worth excellence.  But to make it a chore and a task to obtain them all?  It ruins the fun of the game.  You’re making it your job now.  Pity you won’t ever be paid for it.  Asshat.

This writing style is kind of horrible..

I understand your point, but this looks more like a Livejournal, Facebook or Myspace post.

Please write some real editorial work.

This post is over 3 months old. While I appreciate the point, Charleyy’s style has become more refined and it’s worth checking out some of the newer stuff.

Or, ya know, alternatively you could check out one of the other 7 or so articles that we run at NonsenseGamer. Not everybody is going to like everything.
