Game Informer has given us gamers some juicy new details on the latest Elder Scrolls game in development. I was a fan Oblivion but it had some flaws. It seems that to fixx some issues Bethesda is moulding Skyrim into an almost Fallout-like experience. And thta can’t be a bad thing, can it? Here’s what we know:
- The game will be set 200 years after Oblivion. However it’s moving the action away from Cyrodil and into a new northern land called Skyrim. This isn’t surprising as Bethesda like to give players a new playground with each new game. It’s set during a civil war and dragons are involved.
- The player’s character will be a Dragonborne and you’ll be able to slay dragons and you’ll have been trained by the last Blade.
- There will be 10 races to choose from. Customisable options will be available. Everything from their bodies and faces can be tinkered with.
- Apparently combat will be far more dynamic than past Elder Scroll games. You’ll have access to finishing moves to really crush your enemies, different weapons will have unique attacks and players will even be able to forge their own weapons. I imagine fetch quests will be involved here somewhere. What’s more dual wielding is now a possibility. From the screen shot we have I looks as though you’ll be able to cast magic while holding a weapon, instead of having to swap between each. Mmm, dynamic combat…
- There will be 18 Fallout-esque perks on offer. I’ll be disappointed if Bloody Mess doesn’t make an appearance.
- NPCs are promising to be much more dynamic as well. No longer will you get a close up of their face while conversing with them, instead you can talk and walk. Plus there’s word that NPCs will react to dropped items and such.
- Quests will be randomly generated with the game judging your strengths and weaknesses and giving you appropriate challenges. While these probably won’t be very complex, it will ensure that your never short on things to do while you wander around Skyrim with a dragon slaying battle axe.
- There will be 5 schools of magic which are Destruction, Alteration, Conjuration, Restoration & Illusion. These should be instantly recognisable to veteran Elder Scrolls players.
- There will be 5 “massive” cities which will be summarily attacked by dragons. There’ll be a number of activities to do in cities such as farming or cooking. So if you get tired fighting the evil hordes and decapitating mythical creatures, you can always kick back with some good old fashioned mining.
- Something we already knew, this will be the first game utilising Bethesda’s brand new game engine. The Gamebryo engine having been finally let go. This new engine will provide dynamic shadows and snowfall and wind will effect such things, even the flow of water.
- The third person view has been improved.
- Enemies will include things such as zombies, trolls, skeletons, giants, dragons, big cats, mammoths, wolves and giant spiders.
- Finally the player will now be able to sprint, at the cost of Stamina, which I assume will act as the fatigue meter as well.
